This question is asked more rhetorically than anything else.  Since you are reading this article you have obviously searched online and were brought here.  So, your interest in or knowledge of futon covers is already obvious.  What you may not have thought about is the ways that your cover could contribute to your room’s overall decor.  We will be discussing this and the basic ideas about what makes futon mattresses such easily modified pieces of furniture art in a way.

There was a fad not too many years ago when futons really made their appearance here in the West.  They have been and still are, actually, the traditional bedding choice in places like Japan and other Asian countries.  Their futons are made a bit different than ours here.  Where they have a two-piece system that is essentially just for sleeping on, we have made the futon a flexible bed and couch combination.  The futons that you will find in the Asian countries are designed to be able to be beaten and aired out each morning.  This also allows the room in which the futon was used to be cleared for other activities if necessary.  It also contributes to the Feng Shui of the room by removing the clutter or obstruction of the bed.

Now, what we have done is borrowed from the futon concept and made ours possible to use as both a couch and a bed.  The futon couch here is typically a twin or full size and is simple in design.  The mattress is quite a bit thicker than in the Eastern styles and is made to be used for seating.  This is where having futon covers is a wise idea.

With use as a couch, the mattress itself is bound to get soiled.  Just through normal use, spills and dirt will eventually ruin the mattress.  Covering your futon with either a simple solid colored cotton cover or something more fashionable like a leather or microsuede fabric can make a completely different statement.  With the cover, you will have the ability to transform your space easily and inexpensively.

Let’s face it, the furniture in a room is where our eyes are typically drawn.  And, if you are using it to sit on, then you will naturally need to look at it.  So, making sure that the futon cover is a great match for the decor of your space makes good home decorating sense.  You can also change the look of your room quite quickly by swapping out your slipcovers.  This whole process may take only 5-8 minutes, depending upon the type you have.  In most cases, a simple zipper will allow you to remove one and add the other one on.  In no time, your futon covers turn your more conservative space into a room with a splash of color or flair.
