The Single Futon Examined
Blake’s joke about grandkids got me to thinking about furnishing a kid’s room with a futon. Why not? They make single futons and futon bunk beds, so what would stop you from having a futon for your child?
When I started looking at bedding sets, I was amazed at the prices. They were so cheap! And then I realized well, yeah in comparison to the price of a queen size mattress, a single is going to be inexpensive.
There were some very cheaply made futons out there. You could go that route, but I’d rather spend a little more and have something that will last. I hear more and more people agreeing with me on this. I don’t know if it is a shift in our culture. Are we starting to think more greenly? Maybe people are tired of filling up the landfills with crappy metal futon frames. I can only hope!
I want to look at two kinds of futon singles today: the single futon bed and the futon bunk bed. First, the single futon. You can get a nice wooden frame for a single mattress for about $200. The mattress will cost about the same. So $400 for a child’s bed that will last a lifetime. Ok, the frame will last a lifetime (unless Blake sits on it!) but the mattress will need to be replaced after about 5 years. What’s nice about the single is that there are so many styles. Do you have a little GI Joe? Or a princess? You can find a frame that will make their hearts sing.
The futon bunk bed is pretty cool. It would be perfect for a dorm room or a child’s room. The upper part is pure bunk bed. And the lower part is couch until it needs to be a bed. I can imagine a kid spending a lot of hours on that couch with an Xbox controller in his hand. It’s a practical, clever and above all space-saving design. Wish I’d thought of it. A quality futon bunk is going to cost more than a single. The prices start at $500 for anything half way good.
It will be a few years before we need to start pricing beds for the grandkids. I hope anyway! But it was good to explore this other side of the futon world. It’s nice to know that when we’re ready to look, there are lots of choices in bedding.
